The Benefits of Weight Training You Rarely Hear About…

The physical benefits of weight training are consistently spoken about and are often clear for people to see, whether it be the increased muscle mass, toning, strength or increase in basal metabolic rate [burning more calories at rest].

However, what’s less talked about, and maybe because you can’t take your clothes off to show it, is the positive effects it has on mental health.

I wanted to highlight some of the ways in which weight training can affect your mental state

  1. Higher self-esteem & confidence – Setting goals, achieving them, and seeing yourself progress purely through your own hard work and determination is fantastic for building both self-esteem and confidence
  2. Can reduce anxiety, stress, and depression – Studies have shown that weight training can help alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and depression. This could be down to a number of things including; the release of endorphins that trigger positive feelings, better quality of sleep, increased energy, and promoting feelings of self-control over your life.
  3. Determination & Perseverance – The determination and perseverance it takes to consistently improve through weight training can transfer to other areas of your life. Whether it’s persevering to achieve something at work or in your personal life, you’ll find that the determination you’ve learnt in the gym can have profound effects.

Great post, people usually neglect this side of the gym and it nice that someone has shed some light on it
