The Effects of Coffee

HOLD THAT BLOODY STARBUCKS SUSAN.

From an Espresso to a Cappuccino, Latte to a Mocha, millions of coffees are consumed everyday around the world. But what makes the drink so popular and how does it affect our body?

Increased Alertness & Energy
  • The caffeine in coffee inhibits a chemical found in the brain, responsible for feelings of tiredness [adenosine]. It also stimulates the release of adrenaline, resulting in a surge of energy and alertness.
  • However once caffeine has been removed for the system, the increased adenosine comes back into effect with a vengeance - hence the crash people often feel.
Improves Mood
  • Caffeine also stimulates the release of Dopamine, temporarily improving your mood. However, this release of dopamine can lead to a dependence on caffeine and people can experience withdrawal symptoms when abstaining.
Stimulates Bowel Movements
  • Research shows that coffee inadvertently stimulates the involuntary muscles involved in digestion, resulting in a speeding up of bowel movements.
Increased Blood Pressure
  • Adrenaline raises your heart rate and increases the force of contractions of he heart, leading to a higher blood pressure. Research hasn’t shown this to have any long-term side effects, as blood pressure returns to normal levels after 4-6 hours. However, if you have a predisposed medical condition this may cause problems.

Personally, I'm not a huge drinker of the stuff. If I'm feeling knackered and need a pick me up for something important then I might have a cup. I don’t like the idea of it continually regulating my energy levels and mood. But each to their own.
